PRIMITIVE LONDON RE-OPENED ON SHACKLEWELL LANE

今年、セントラルロンドン、東京、ロサンゼルスでのポップアップショップを経て,Shacklewell Lane の Lighthouse Studio にて新しいスペースに移転。その上、スタジオとギャラリーもひとつになり、引き続き、ロンドンと東京ベースの色々なブランドをセレクト。 ２月から３月にかけて、PURPLE PR の協力の元、ロンドン中心部の St Martins ホテル、Front Roomにて初ロンドンでのポップアップショップを成功させた。アーティストである Maja + Dora、Henry Mackay-Bull や Daniel Swanらの店内でのアート展示会を開催した。 また、去年に行ったFAKE TOKYOでのポップアップショップの成功に引き続き、アートキューレーションを手掛ける Babylon Showroomと共にコラボレーションし、原宿ラフォーレにて東京で再びポップアップショップを展開した。

ポップアップツアーの最終地として、ロサンゼルスの Weltenbuerger にて
プリミティブ初となるアメリカ進出を果たした。 そして今、ホームグラウンドである Hackney に戻り、ロンドンから東京の若手デザイナー、

Shaun Samson, Banzai, Nasir Mazhar, Komakino, Ambush, Nukeme, iLiL, Martine Rose
などを豊富に取り揃えております。

PRIMITIVE LONDON MANIFESTO :

Primitive, as its name intimates, is inherently raw. Like an embryonic form that is yet to be defined, Primitive is a fluid entity open to interpretation. An omnium-gatherum of artists, designers, writers, and musicians, working together, blending different media and disciplines to produce innovative creations are the fundamentals of Primitive London.

Creativity today is too often expected to join forces with commerce, marketed and capitalised on, paradoxically resulting in its being controlled and restricted. It was through this dissatisfaction and disillusionment of the bureaucracy of the creative industries that Primitive was born. Primitive does not operate as a business. The focus is on production, not profit. Primitive was set up to provide a platform free of constraints, on which creativity is given the time and space to fearlessly grow and be experimented with. Whether this is creating something out of nothing utilising found objects, or employing the latest technology – it is the pure act and desire to create which underpins the Primitive ethos. Thus it is not about reaching the finality of perfection in practice or production but to keep on pushing.

An espalier of trenchant lines, its angularity suggesting a sense of control, restriction and obduracy: the Primitive logo is a searing, minacious symbol. Emblems – often those political or religious – possess the capability to arouse fear, representing authority, evoking militancy. However, Primitive’s mission is not to preach or provide utopian ideologies. Primitive aims to vehemently encourage and promulgate freedom, independence and originality in creative thinking and practice: the logo thus symbolises the bellicosity with which Primitive is prepared to implement this objective.

The contrast of Primitive’s fluid disposition with the severity of the logo, alongside its being fundamentally anti-corporate yet giving the impression of a corporation, demonstrates an irony that is conducive to being able to enjoy what is taken seriously. Central to Primitive is to take delight in the process and activity of creativity, not to see it as a chore of having to work towards strict deadlines and pleasing authoritative figures.

London – the centre of the Youthquake, the birthplace of Punk and the DIY ethic, the flag-bearer for innovatory fashions and the embracing of multiculturalism – has greatly informed Primitive’s identity. However, mired down by the commercial bastardisation and elitism of creativity today, London is losing the freshness and originality that came to define it. So to recapture and preserve this former spirit, Primitive seeks to encourage and provide the opportunity for young, emerging – as well as established – talent from around the globe to showcase work in this celebrated city, as well as worldwide online.

Coalescing like-minded souls of disparate practices and disciplines, the common thread that binds the individuals that make up Primitive London is an innocent love for making, enjoying it, and being unafraid to do this with each other. Collaborative practice is integral to Primitive as experimental synthesis is propitious to the creation of revolutionary and spectacular ideas. Primitive is a community, with every single contributor and contribution helping to define the heterogeneous idiom of Primitive London. In the information society we now live in where knowledge and theory is increasingly being fetishised, so relegating creative practice to the sidelines, Primitive is a level and unbiased platform on which to reassess creativity and meaning within the chaos of the digital age.

Innergaze drag us slightly further back into the glorious cradle of dance music. Their music, crushed and static, obscured by sound. EBM, coldwave, early techno fight it out for dominance of the drum machine. Casually brutal vocals force their way through from the Death Factory. As if Chris & Cosey’s dalliances with the Eurythmics had conjured a restless pioneering demon to duet with Annie Lenox but had instead ended up consuming her. Celestial synths coexisting with the industrial landscape bellow.

Steve Summers (L.I.E.S, Confused House)

Brooklyn’s Jason Letkiewicz is a traditionalist. Encountered out of context, virtually any of his projects could be mistaken for decades-old tracks left moldering on basement tapes. As Alan Hurst, he records droning coldwave; his Rhythm Based Lovers makes twinkling electronic funk with a New York-via-Miami pedigree; as Steve Summers, he dedicates himself to analog house tracks rooted in Chicago and New York/New Jersey. “In the Mode for Love,” despite the title, is an ominous, nail-bitten jam that takes after Bam Bam’s “Where’s Your Child.” It’s lo-fi as fuck, caked in grit and greasy flangers, and with a down-pitched growl that chills to the bone.

EXHIBITION 1 : Cassette Playa

Cassette Playaはロンドンに住むCarri Mundaneによって作られたファッションブランド。９０年代スケーターファッション、人類学、ヘビーメタル、UKガレージスタイルなどのグローバルリチュアルから影響をうけている。Cassette Playaは、科学やサイエンスフィクションなどに影響を受けているユートピアン／フューチャーブランド。そのため、数々のテクノロジー技術を取り組んだデザインなどを展開＝デジタルプリントなどから、デジタルプレゼンテーションまで。Carri はCassette Playa をの世界観を「techno, tribal, positive and primal」と表現している。

なぜデザイナーになったんですか？

ファッションはきらいだけど、パーソナル・スタイルが好き。スタイルっていうのは、一番原始的で世界的なコミュニケーションの仕方と考えてるの。

何に興味があるんですか？

インターネット！グローバル・ストリート・カルチャー デザインをするにあたって何をしますか？ デザインするにあたって一番好きな仕事でもある、沢山のリサーチ！インターネット、図書館、美術館、アートギャラリーとかで！カセットプレーヤーのシェイプはクラッシック・カットがほとんどだけど、プリントや生地のチョイスによってクラッシックを壊していくの。

これから先の願望は？

テクノロジーはどうやって作品に影響を及ぼしていますか？

CPのコレクションや私のプロセスなどには、新しいテクノロジーやサイエンス・フィクションの影響があるわ。

Cassette Playa is a fashion label created and designed by Carri Mundane who currently lives and works in London, influenced by global rituals including ’90s skater fashion, anthropology, heavy metal and UK Garage. Cassette Playa is a utopian and future brand inspired by science and science fiction that incorporates technology into every level of their processes = digital print to digital presentation. Carri describes the Cassette Playa universe as “techno, tribal, positive and primal”.

• what compelled you into becoming a designer?

I DNT LIKE FASHION BUT I LIKE PERSONAL STYLE. STYLE IS THE MOST UNIVERSAL AND PRIMITIVE FORM OF COMMUNICATION.

• what drives/motivates you?

THE INTERNET ! GLOBAL STREET CULTURE

• what is involved in your design process?

ALOT OF RESEARCH – THATS MY FAVOURITE BIT – ON THE INTERNET, IN LIBRARIES AND PRIMARY RESEARCH IN MUSEUMS AND ART GALLERIES. MOST OF CP SHAPES ARE A CLASSIC CUT – SUBVERTED BY PRINT OR FABRIC CHOICE. • what hopes do you have for the future? F U T U R E N O W !

• how do new technologies affect your work?

NEW TECHNOLOGIES AND SCIENCE FICTION AFFECT MY COLLECTION AND MY PROCESSES – AS IN I DIRECTLY REFERENCE THEM IN MY GRAPHICS + PRINTS AND I USE NEW TECHNOLOGIES SUCH AS DIGITAL PRINT AND RAPID PROTOTYPING. I ALSO USE TECHNOLOGY TO PRESENT MY COLLECTIONS = VIDEO, INTERACTIVE DIGITAL PRESENTATIONS + THE WORLDS FIRST A.R CATWALK SHOW

• where on the Internet do you go for inspiration?

I DNT HAVE ONE SITE, I USUALLY JUST START WITH A SEARCH OR IMAGE AND END UP SOMEWHERE COMPLETELY RANDOM AND AMAZING. SANGBLEU.COM + TECHNOLOGY BLOGS are in my bookmarks right now

• what does it take to be a Londoner?

U HAVE TO BE HARDCORE • what do you love about Japan – what does Tokyo have that London doesn’t? TOKYO IS MY SPIRTUAL HOME – TOTAL SENSORY OVERSTIMULATION. IT IS SAFER, FRIENDLY – AN EASIER CITY THAN LDN. KINDA UTOPIAN BUT HAS SUCH AN ACCELERATED PACE = PERFECT

EXHIBITION 1 : Nano Aoshima

４月１４〜１５日

INTERVIEW:

LCFを２０１１に卒業し、ロンドンを拠点としている日本人のデザイナー。

着心地がいいということを重視しデザインされた彼女の卒業コレクションは、スポーツやストリートウェア／日本の木彫りからのインスピレーションをうけている。その洋風と和風を合わしたデザインから、男の子のような強さと、魅力のある女の子らしさも合わせ持ったデザインになっている。身体を大げさにさらさず隠されることで、ボディー本質のエクステンションのようなエレガンスさが表れている。

なぜスェット生地？

スェットには特に決まった性別、時代性がなく、男女ともに一日、または一週間のどこかでは心地よさのために着る。スェットはカジュアルな生地だけど、それを使って作る事で、逆に洗練されたものや、男らしさの強調、違った女の子らしさを作り出せると思う。

なぜロンドン？

制作する基準や、創造性の基準がとても高くて、チャレンジできるから。

大変だけど、その分刺激されるし学べる事がたくさんある。

なぜPrimitiveに置くの？

オーナーの二人がとっても好き。それにPrimitiveで扱っているデザイナーの作品もその人たちも。すごく素敵な人たちだと思う。彼らがファッションに対して持っている考えにも共感を持てるし、すごく素晴らしいと思う。

Inspired by sports- and street-wear: movement, youth and comfort is key to NANO AOSHIMA’s work. Tokyo born, but since the age of thirteen she has been living between England and Japan. Her S/S 12 womenswear collection takes an innovative approach to sweatshirt – decorated with twisted tassel fringing likened to the lines of Japanese woodprint. Covering the body instead of exposing it, her clothes are an extension to the body that enhances the form and provides an elegant presence. This season also welcomes her first menswear/unisex pieces. With an admiration for Japanese fashion and the Western designers for pioneering the concept of fashion, she finds great inspiration from the two cities she calls home – Tokyo and London.

• Why sweatshirt fabric?

There is no identified gender or age for sweatshirt, both female and male put on sweatshirts at some point of the day or week for comfort. It is a casual fabric but I think by working with it, some interesting effects can be born through it such as sophistication, exaggerated masculinity, creating different feels and tastes of femininity.

• Why London?

It’s competitive, has a high standard of creativity, it’s challenging, and it’s stressful but exciting, there’s lots to take in.

• Why do you stock at Primitive?

I love the owners. They are truly amazing people. I also like the designers that they stock – both their work and personalities. I also like Primitive’s complex ideas and beliefs towards Fashion. I really admire that.
