SPEAKERS BIO

Yuniya (Yuni) Kawamura is associate professor of Sociology at the Fashion Institute of Technology. She is the author of “The Japanese Revolution in Paris Fashion” (Berg 2004), “Fashion-ology: An Introduction to Fashion Studies” (Berg 2005) and “Doing Research in Fashion and Dress: An Introduction to Qualitative Methods” (Berg, forthcoming in 2011). She is currently working on her fourth book “Fashioning Japanese Subcultures” which is scheduled to be published by Berg. She earned her PhD in Sociology from Columbia University in 2001. She is also professionally trained as a fashion designer.

Dan Bailey, originally from York in England, found a home from home in Japan after moving there in 2002. In 2008, after years of translating lyrics for punk bands and being out and about on the club scene, he founded bilingual style and pop-culture blogzine Tokyo Dandy. By 2010 Tokyo Dandy was seen as the ‘most influential fashion blog in Japan’ by the likes of WWD and MTV. As well as hosting parties that are as popular with fashion editors, celebrities and models as they are with Harajuku kids, Dan has developed a career in photography – shooting parties for the likes of Gucci, Louis Vuitton, Prada, Marc Jacobs and Chanel. Dan contributes to High Fashion magazine ‘Commons&Sense’ and has photographed various brand look-books as well as editorials and band portraits.

Nicole Michalek moved from San Antonio, TX to New York City in 2003 to study at Parsons School of Design, and earned a BFA in Communication Design and Technology. Soon after graduating from Parsons, she began working at NYLON Magazine – a hip and edgy fashion publication – of which she is now the Senior Designer. Nicole developed an interest and passion in Japanese culture after visting Tokyo and Kyoto during college and again last year. She studied Japanese language university, and contributed writing and photography for different stories in the magazine, featuring street style, hair + makeup, and more.

Concept:
The process of circulation inspired by the relationship between cities and people.
The outcome inspired by the relationship between cities and people.
The quest motivated and inspired by the relationship between cities and people.
The accumulation of research inspired by the relationship between cities and people.

Born in Fukuoka in 1985. After studying electrical control engineering in high school and fashion in dress design school, he started his own label “BALMUNG”. Some of the clothes were sold at several speciality stores in Tokyo. He has a variety of experiences; being an assistant of a brand, buyer for clothing store CANDY, and also working as a director at party lounges such as VANITY, MEAT, TFR, Narzib, and NEON SPREAD. With the experience, he now makes clothing as BALMUNG. He provides his clothes for celebrities such as LADY GAGA and Mademoiselle Yulia. He is a part of “dinner”, a group that performs a variety of artistic activities. They create special installations with clothes. Some of the works by “dinner” appear in music videos of LADY GAGA and VOGUEHOMME JAPAN.

When he was in ESMOD JAPON, he was introduced as “THE NEXT GENERATION” of DAZED & CONFUSED JAPAN along with other designers such as Sandra Backlund, Sachio Kawasaki, and Louise Gray. His work has been photographed by Hedi Slimane, which became the cover of Dazed & Confused Japan. In 2008, after winning a prize in a fashion competition, he went to France to study the art of haute couture in Chambre Syndicale de la couture parisienne. After coming back to Japan in 2009, he started “JUNYA SUZUKI” with Reiko Sakuma who graduated ESMOD JAPON as the top student. Keeping Japanese pop culture as the roots, he expresses with the concept, “what is a character”. The collection consists of ready to wear, costumes, and other products. Inspired from the two dimensional world, he creates three dimensional products by using the fabric three dimensionally.

http://changefashion.net/fashionshow/2010/04/23133437.html

After working for Charles Anastase as an assistant designer, he started LIVRAISON in 2005. In 2009, he left LIVRAISON and started Christian Dada. The theme of this season is “Battle Avatar.” This is for those hopeless young people that aimlessly wander the streets of Shibuya or Harajuku, those who are “neat” and despised by “decent” adults, those that want to get away from their daily lives. This is for the modern young generation that want to fight an imaginary battle at the “Future Grand Canyon”.
